This study followed children with familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic condition in which LDL-cholesterol levels are elevated, for 20 years after while most were being treated with statins. They then compared the rate of atherosclerotic plaque development to that of their unaffected siblings, and the rate of cardiovascular events to that of their affected parents who didn’t have medications available to them in their youth.
