South Africa's unemployment rate has hit its highest level since the start of the statistics agency's quarterly labour force survey in 2008. Data from Statistics South Africa shows that the official unemployment rate increased by 0.5% points, coming in at 34.9% of the labour force in the third quarter of 2021. Unemployment under the expanded definition, which also counts job seekers who have given up on the search, increased by 2.2% points to 46.6% in the third quarter versus the previous three months. The number of discouraged work-seekers increased by 545 000. Joining us now to talk about these figures is Secretary-General of the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU), Zwelinzima Vavi.
