The Camino de Santiago is a 500 mile pilgrimage starting from near the border of France and Spain, and ending at the ocean on the far west of Spain. And I'm going to backpack it! So how am I going to hike across Spain with just a backpack for 45 days? Is it really doable? Yes! It is hard? Also yes! So let's take a look at what I have decided are my bare necessities for crossing an entire country on foot!
Oh, also fun plot twist: I have Functional Neurological Disorder and am trying to retrain my brain and body to function normally, because sometimes it really just doesn't! So my Camino is going to have extra challenges presented to it daily. Last year, my Camino attempt ended in tears, panic attacks and a quick flight home when my body, my brain, and my mental health suffered and being home was the only thing that could make it better. I had sworn off ever traveling again, and that's just NOT me.
But I am determined to do hard things. I am determined to do things that scare me. Avoiding things that cause stress and anxiety have only sheltered me and caused me to think that avoidance is the answer, but it's not. So maybe this, taking a huge, scary step (or several 100k) across Spain is how I will get better!
