Stroke? Call 911. It is a free call. There is only 4 hours of time before NOTHING can be done for stroke. Permanent brain damage from stroke starts only 4 hours after it starts. Call 911 without delay.

FAST is the acronym to simply determine if it could be a stroke. Call 911 and get to a hospital immediately to know. DO NOT DELAY!

FAST
Face: Smile and see if one side of the face droops. Yes, call 911.
Arms: Raise both arms. Does one arm drop down? Yes, call 911.
Speech: Say a short phrase and check for slurred or strange speech. If slurred, call 911.
Time: If the answer to "any" of these is yes, call 911 right away and write down the time when symptoms started.

Warning Signs
Sometimes a stroke happens gradually, but you're likely to have one or more sudden symptoms like these:

Numbness or weakness in your face, arm, or leg, especially on one side
Confusion or trouble understanding other people
Difficulty speaking
Trouble seeing with one or both eyes
Problems walking or staying balanced or coordinated
Dizziness
Severe headache that comes on for no reason

If you have these symptoms, call 911 even if you're not sure you're having a stroke. (3)

Minutes matter in treating stroke. Calling a doctor or driving to the hospital yourself wastes time. Ambulance workers can judge your situation sooner, and that boosts your chance of getting the treatment you need as soon as possible. When stroke strikes, every minute's delay of treatment counts. Ischemic stroke occurs when a clot blocks blood flow to the brain. Two million brain cells die every minute until blood flow is restored. Infusion of the clot-busting drug known as TPA (tissue-type plasminogen activator) can restore blood flow to the brain. However, TPA must be infused in a hospital, as quickly as possible, and no later than 4.5 hours after the stroke. (1)

Don't brush off signs of a "brain attack" - Stroke symptoms that go away on their own are still a medical emergency. Get to a hospital as fast as you can. Every stroke is a medical emergency because it means that blood flow to part of the brain has been interrupted. Everyone needs to be able to recognize the signs of a stroke and get to a hospital fast because "time is brain." The longer you wait, the more brain cells could die. Surprisingly, many people fail to act on a warning signal that a major stroke is in progress or may be on the way. (4)

Stroke Signs and Symptoms:
Sudden severe headache with no known cause is a stroke sign in men and women. During a stroke, every minute counts! Fast treatment can lessen the brain damage that stroke can cause. By knowing the signs and symptoms of stroke, you can take quick action and perhaps save a life—maybe even your own.

Signs of Stroke in Men and Women
Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech.
Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.
Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
