The imitation game: A story of Rashid Khan

A short video clip went viral on Twitter in July 2021 showing 16-year-old Sussex leg-spinner Archie Lenham taking a wicket in the T20 Blast, i.e., England’s professional T20 tournament.

Lenham, bowling over the wicket to a left-handed batter, runs in energetically before fizzing the ball into the pitch with plenty of topspin. The ball pitches slide on and trap the batter in front of the wickets, beating him for pace.

From the approach to the delivery to the zip, everything about the wicket is pure Rashid Khan.

Rashid Khan, a familiar face to most cricket fans, is the world’s premier T20 spinner. In this video, we will track the rise of Mr. Khan, the revolution he began, and the imitators he produced in cricket’s most profitable form.

Rashid Khan, the official ICC T20 player of the last decade, was born in the cricketing backwaters of Nangarhar, Afghanistan, in 1998. He grew up idolizing the rapid leg-spin of Shahid Afridi.

It is this art that, with his subtle variations on a stump-to-stump line, Khan has revolutionized in the course of taking 270 T20 wickets before his 23rd birthday.
