These sentences highlight various heteronyms in English. These are two or words which share the same spelling but have different meanings and different sounds.

English isn't a phonetic language. This means that the spelling of a word doesn't tell you how the word is pronounced.

To overcome this, do the following:

1. Listen as much as possible
2. Listen and read at the same time
3. Learn words and phrases with audio
