Thumb sucking is very normal for children under 3 years of age. If it persists beyond 3 years of age it is better to have it checked because it can cause problems with the positioning of the teeth and the growth of the jaws. When you come to us the things we generally check is the intensity the frequency and the duration for how long the thumb sucking habit has persisted. Because of thumb sucking secondary habits like mouth breathing and tongue thrusting on the front teeth also develop. So the sooner we detect it the easier the correction at home if you want to try and break the habit you can give the child some mittens to wear or some long sleeve dresses so that you can restrict the movement of the thumb or any of the other fingers into the mouth. But other than this trying anything at home may not help if it goes beyond three years of age and if we notice that some amount of teeth positioning changes have already started we might intervene with giving some appliances that will act as a reminder for the child to not put the finger in the mouth. The most common reasons for thumb sucking might be emotional insecurities or just a habit or it's usually seen around the time when a younger sibling is born. So along with correction it is important to assess what psychological reason is there behind the child continuing the habit of thumb sucking beyond a certain age and we try and fix that issue before we intervene and give a correction by putting a barrier in the mouth.
