The average age is around 65 years old for men and women. Some literature will use an age of 50-55 years old or older as appropriate for surgery.
But of course there are many younger individuals who have knee replacement surgery. Why are more people getting knee replacement younger?
Some reasons are increasing obesity levels, increasing in sedentary lifestyle. Also, technology is improving including other options such as partial knee replacements and increased longevity of the knee replacements.
Why care if you are younger? Increased risk of revision knee replacement surgery, which a more complicated surgery than a typical knee replacement.
In the end, it comes down to weighing the pros and cons and making a decision that is appropriate for you!
