Using a model heart and some real-world analogies, Mansour Razminia, MD, an AMITA Health clinical cardiac electrophysiologist based in Chicago’s northwestern suburbs, describes the various types of arrhythmia, namely:
ATRIAL FIBRILLATION (AFib)
This dangerously irregular heartbeat can feel like a fluttering in the chest, and might be accompanied by symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath and dizziness.
TACHYCARDIA
Characterized by a racing heart or a rapid heart rate, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is when your heart beats more than 100 beats per minute. Symptoms include fatigue, fainting, lightheadedness, chest pain or pressure, but the condition is generally benign (albeit distressing to experience). SVT is frequently encountered in women.
BRADYCARDIA
By contrast, bradycardia is a slow heart rate, typically below 60 beats per minute. This condition can cause dizziness or lightheadedness, confusion and fainting. A pacemaker might need to be implanted to help speed up the heart to a normal rhythm.
