Mahler Symphony no 9
New York Philharmonic Orchestra
Avery Fisher Hall (Lincoln Center) New York
18 February 1982
Tennstedt conducted the 9th in Philadelphia in January 1982 and this performance in New York some 7 weeks later. This performance has
the visceral quality that Tennstedt brought so often to his Mahler perfromances and this is the one to hear. His 9th symphony interpretation almost tears one apart listening to it. One of the greatest performances of this symphony by the greatest conductor I ever saw in all my 55 years of concert going. In saying that, I rank only Furtwängler higher than this.
