In late 2019, the Bassist of Columbia Big Band heard a rumor about a new work being developed in recognition of the recently-passed centennial of Gustav Holst’s seminal orchestral suite, “The Planets”. Many of the band had previously performed the Holst work, in whole or parts, and as word spread the calls to find and perform this work grew - before being cut short by a pandemic.
Now, after a year of hard work, the Band presents Jeremy Levy’s Grammy-nominated “The Planets: Reimagined”. Join us on this journey through our solar system - the sun sets, the stars come out, and we visit our nearest lunar companion before setting out on the epic journey that Levy has put in front of us.
Most famous in the United States for his “Girl From Ipanema”, Antonio Carlos Jobim is nonetheless a luminary of Brazilian music, having internationalized Bossa Nova and merged it into the Jazz traditions with tunes like “Quiet Night of Quiet Stars (Corcovado)”. As with “Ipanema”, “Corcovado” is a wistful tune, singing about quiet nights in Rio de Janeiro - in the original Portuguese, the lyrics speak of looking into the night at the mountain Corcovado, on which the Cristo Redentor statue is placed. Gene Lees wrote English lyrics that capture the spirit of Jobim’s narrator, though removing specific references to the city of Rio.
