American composer Amy Beach captures the essence of a Scottish folk tune in this delightful 1903 piece. It's American but with a Scottish flavor.
Notes from pianist Duane Hulbert: "Amy Beach (1867-1944) was one of the most revered American composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She was a child prodigy, having composed her first piece at age one. Even though she demonstrated remarkable musical talent at a young age, her mother tried to keep her away from the family piano, believing that Amy would disrespect parental authority in doing so. That didn’t deter her in the least bit. She eventually made her concert debut with the Boston Symphony at age 16 playing the Moscheles piano concerto in G minor to critical acclaim.
She was accepted into the elite Second New England School of Composers as the first and only woman among the other famous male composers MacDowell, Foote, Paine, Chadwick and Parker. By the way, she was also the youngest to be honored. During her career she wrote more than 300 works, while maintaining a busy concert schedule in both the East and West coasts of the US, as well as tours to Europe.
The Scottish Legend was written in 1903 and was part of her Opus 54."
