Neil deGrasse Tyson and Joe Rogan talk about Columbus and his story with natives.
Christopher Columbus used a well-timed lunar eclipse to trick the indigenous people of Jamaica into giving him their food supplies. This event occurred during Columbus's fourth and final voyage in 1503 when he and his crew were stranded on the island and running out of provisions.
Columbus knew from his astronomical tables that a lunar eclipse was due on the night of February 29, 1504. He told the Arawak people that his Christian God was angry with them for not providing enough food and that He would show His displeasure by making the moon disappear. When the lunar eclipse occurred as predicted, the terrified natives believed Columbus's warning. They quickly agreed to supply him and his crew with food to appease what they thought was Columbus’s powerful deity.
