Number 10: Krampus Celebrations.
Ok, let's start off with a tradition that truly doesn't make sense. So, if you know Christmas, you know the story of St. Nick. But, there's a darker part of the tale that involves a character by the name of Krampus. Krampus is literally the opposite of Santa Claus in every single way. Santa is human, Krampus is a demon, Santa is good, Krampus isn't, Santa brings children who have been nice toys and other gifts, Krampus...doesn't...I'll leave it at that for now.
The point is, no one should want to celebrate Krampus in any form or stretch of the imagination. And yet, they do in Austria, Germany, and other parts of the world. There are whole celebrations dedicated to Krampus, including parades going on in the streets. It gets so bad at times, that they'll go and dress up as Krampus and try to scare or prank other people, including tourists who happen to be at the city events.
What's truly strange though is that they're celebrating or praising a being that literally goes into people's houses, finds the naughty children, and either beats them with a reed, or, puts them in a bag and takes them to the underworld. Or maybe even throws them in a river, depending on which legend you believe.
So yeah, people celebrate a being that does that.
Number 9: The Pickle Ornament.
Alright, I want you to picture a Christmas tree. It can be the one you have now, or your favorite one you've seen. Ok? Now, think about the ornaments that are on it. Can you do it? Great. Now, how many of those ornaments are shaped like a pickle? None? Really? Well then, you need to learn about the German "tradition" of the pickle ornament.
To be clear, people don't hang pickles on Christmas trees (though to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised to find someone who did). Rather, the story is that you get an ornament made to be shaped like a pickle, complete with the green hue of the tree. Then, so the story goes, the parents would hang the ornament in a place on the tree that isn't easy to spot right away. Then, on Christmas morning, the kids would try to find the ornament, and whoever does so first will get a very special gift. Think of it like a bonus Christmas present.
Here's the rub, though, despite the claims that it was a German tradition...most Germans don't know about it. In fact, it's actually more popular in the United States than in Germany. So likely, it's either a really obscure legend from the country, or someone made it up to sell pickle ornaments. Either way, it's a real tradition.
Number 8: Spider Web Trees.
Before we talk about the spider webs, take a moment to like this video and join the Zero2Hero community by using the buttons below!
Let's continue with the Christmas Tree ornaments deal, alright? Because the last thing that you would possibly want on your tree, in any way, is spiders and their webs. Right? Because not only would it make you afraid to go near the tree, but, you’d be wondering why the spiders are even in the house since it’s possibly winter, and all. But, in the Ukraine, they take this fear and dislike of spiders that most have and turn it into a powerful legend.
In the legend, there was a family that was so poor that they couldn't even decorate their Christmas Tree. Which I totally sympathize with, because that's a low point for sure. They went to bed sorrowful, and upon hearing their cries, the spiders that happened to live in the house went to work. They raced to the tree, and "decorated" it with their webs. When the family awoke, the tree wasn't just covered in webs, the webs were silver and gold. Thus the family's future was more secure.
So now, in the Ukraine, people decorate their trees with fake webs (thank goodness) to try and bring good luck and fortune to their homes.
And while I still hate spider, I have to admit, that does sound like a fun tradtition. Although, I’d prefer the gold and silver ones, personally.
Number 7: Kentucky Fried Chicken.
In the United States, one of the more popular fast food joints is none other than Kentucky Fried Chicken, or KFC for short. It's not your "typical" fast food joint because it focuses on chicken, mashed potatoes, and gravy, but it's found a home in the country, and all over the world. But, over in Japan, they have a very special day dedicated to having KFC...Christmas.
