Pediatric infectious diseases expert Diego Hijano, MD, of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, shares five things parents of children under age 5 should know about the COVID-19 vaccine.
1. COVID-19 is not a mild disease in children, and the vaccine is very safe.
2. The risk of heart inflammation is higher with the virus than with the COVID-19 vaccine.
3. COVID-19 vaccines do not affect fertility.
4. During the Omicron surge, nine out of 10 children hospitalized with COVID-19 had not been vaccinated.
5. Even healthy children with no medical conditions can get complications with COVID-19.
