In today's session, we explain how to attack mid-court balls using the Wind Screen wiper forehand and when NOT to use the Wind screen wiper stroke.
When hitting a forehand from the middle of the court, several muscle groups are used such as the glutes, quadriceps, calves, core, shoulders, and forearm muscles. The glutes and quadriceps are responsible for generating power through the legs, while the core stabilizes the body during the swing. The shoulders and arm muscles work together to create racquet head speed, and the forearm muscles control the direction and spin of the ball.
Biomechanics:
The forehand stroke can be broken down into several parts - the preparation, the backswing, the forward swing, the point of contact, and the follow-through. In each of these stages, specific biomechanical principles come into play.
Preparation: In this phase, the player positions themselves correctly in preparation for the incoming ball. They must maintain a balanced stance with the feet shoulder-width apart and the body facing the net.
Backswing: The player initiates the stroke by taking the racquet back behind the body. The racquet arm should extend behind the body while the non-racquet arm acts as a balance, counterbalancing the motion of the racquet.
Forward swing: As the player moves into the forward phase of the stroke, the racquet arm swings forward, leading with the elbow. The shoulders should rotate, creating torque and power in the stroke.
Point of contact: The point of contact is arguably the most important part of the stroke. The player must make contact with the ball in front of the body, ideally at waist height, with a slightly closed racquet face to produce topspin. The wrist should fully rotate to impart spin on the ball.
Follow-through: The follow-through is the final part of the stroke. The racquet should continue its natural momentum, finishing across the opposite shoulder. The body should remain balanced and ready for the next shot.
