Several Grad rockets hit the international airport in Tripoli on Monday evening, just 32 hours after similar attacks forced the main airport to close the day before.
The United Nations has withdrawn all its staff from Libya as the airport’s closure and the worsening security make it impossible for the organization to continue their work.
Militants fired rockets from Qasr Ben Ghashir, a town close to the airport, online newspaper Libya Herald reported. According to the BBC, the control tower and 12 planes were damaged in the attack. Authorities have not managed to identify the attackers.
Rival militias were engaged in heavy exchanges of gunfire starting on Sunday as they vied for the control of the airport.
The closure of Tripoli International Airport left the African country without a connection to the outside world. All flights to Libya’s two other international airports in Mistrata and Benghazi have also been suspended since Monday and two months ago respectively.
