This is a very short video of a Makoplasty partial knee replacement of the knee. The patient had worn out the inner compartment of their knee and their pain was only localized to the worn out side. The procedure was done at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange. On this video, I go through some of the surgical steps. I focused on the robotic assisted technology. The patient is on the operating room table. A 5 inch incision has been made over the knee. The computer screen which I am viewing during surgery is a virtual image mirroring everything I am actually doing in the knee. The computer tracks my moves and the position of the limb by way of the arrays (small radar dishes) which are temporarily attached to the leg. Multiple registration points are taken and used to synchronize the CT images with the real knee. Once all the data is collected and the virtual implants positioned, a mechanical burr is brought into the joint and is used to remove the arthritic surface. The bur is attached to the robotic arm which has been programed to not allow the surgeon to move the burr beyond the surgical plan. If the burr is accidently pushed beyond a safe boundary, the robot will instantaneously stop the burr. The robotic technology therefore allows safe and accurate removal of bone and preservation of normal tissue. Once the bone removal is complete the final implants are cemented into place and the wound is closed.

Dr. Mora is a native of Orange County. He graduated from Anaheim High School in Orange County CA. He completed his training at the UC Irvine where he finished in the top of his class earning the coveted AOA Medical Society honors. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery training USC where he was elected chief resident of his class. He completed an extra year of training with a Sports Medicine, Cartilage, Shoulder, Hip arthroscopy and Knee Fellowship at Santa Monica Orthopaedic and Sports Medical Group.
