Are Lifting Straps "Cheating"? (Should You Use Them?)
Should you use lifting straps, or are they a “crutch” to be avoided?
The whole question of whether using lifting straps or lifting hooks makes you less manly in the gym is ridiculous, and it shouldn’t be something you consider when you’re trying to decide whether or not to use them. They’re just a tool to enhance your training to get the results you want.
Whether you should use them in your training completely depends on what you’re trying to achieve in the gym.
If your goals are primarily hypertrophy-based – your main focus in the gym is on increasing your muscle size – and you find that using lifting straps helps you activate the targeted muscle more effectively on certain exercises, then go ahead and use them.
From a pure muscle-building perspective, lifting straps are helpful for back training when used properly. One of the biggest challenges with back training is taking your forearms and biceps somewhat out of the equation and shifting more of the stress onto your back muscles.
I’ve used lifting straps almost the entire time I’ve been training on nearly all my back exercises and for heavier lifts like shrugs and Romanian deadlifts. By not having to think about my grip, I can put 100% of my focus on overloading the specific muscle I’m trying to hit.
However, if you’re training primarily for strength, if you have practical day-to-day use for grip strength, or if you’re a powerlifter or an Olympic lifter and you need to be able to perform your lifts without straps, then of course don’t use them. It just depends on your goals.
Another possibility is that you’re training both for aesthetics and to maximize strength. In that case, a good option is to use lifting straps or hooks on certain exercises if you find them beneficial and then to incorporate separate grip strength exercises into your training.
Targeted grip training exercises can build up your grip strength more effectively because you can take your grip all the way to failure, whereas on regular weight training exercises, you’re probably not going anywhere near failure.
Bottom line, just like a lifting belt, lifting shoes, or pre-workouts, lifting straps are just an optional tool that lifters can use depending on their goals.
