Officials Institute online monthly meeting for November in the 22/23 season, held on 11/18/22 talking about 2022/2023 NFHS Points of Emphasis (POE) hand checks, post play and off ball. Moderating the meeting was OI Chairman of the board, Joshua Schroeder. Reviewing NHFS points of emphasis is important to properly prepare for the upcoming season and give a refresher on rules that simply need a little extra attention. We will devote a little time for each of these topics, hand checks, post play and off ball to get a good idea of what we should be looking for when officiating these types of plays.
Here at the the Officials Institute, we believe that watching video together builds confidence as individual officials and as a community of like minded officials that support each other in the constant state of learning. All videos shown in this meeting are NFHS high school basketball games.
This online meeting will showcase 12 different video clips covering hand checks, post play or off ball plays AND includes 1 BONUS CLIP.
0:00 - Intro
0:47 - Drive down the sideline with the defender putting a hand on the entire way with an ending call of out of bounds. Let's discuss.
6:09 - Hand check is called in this clip but it comes from the Lead reaching into the Centers area. Is this a reach and get call?
13:39 - Crash happens at the division line with no whistle. Was it a block? Charge? Hand check? Watch and see.
16:30 - Post player receives the ball and when he starts his move, a hand check foul is called on his defender.
19:45 - Two post players fighting for position with the defender falling to the floor momentarily. No call by the official. Why?
23:04 - More post play that seems rough and no call by the officials. This seems to need a whistle to help clean up play.
25:13 - Foul called on this defender reaching into the back of a post player. Could we pass on this foul?
28:08 - Holding foul in the post, but was the offensive player being inhibited of movement? Watch and decide for yourself.
31:06 - Rough play in the post, off ball and the Lead calls a double foul.
40:40 - Player passes the ball then proceeds to run into his defender with an elbow up and into the face. This has to be a foul.
46:28 - Throw-in play with the Lead calling a foul. Why didn't the Trail get this? Was the Trail even ready?
51:55 - Defender grabs a jersey to stop a cut to the basket off ball. Center calls a foul. Is this a good get? Watch and see.
54:49 - BONUS CLIP
59:51 - Next Meeting - NO CALLS
Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right.
