Approx 50 people were injured and one 20-month-old toddler was killed in Spain’s Catalonia region on August 30, when hailstones up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) in diameter rained down. The toddler reportedly died after a large hailstone struck her in the head.

Catalonia’s meteorological service said hot weather in the region has caused the Mediterranean Sea to be warmer than usual, increasing the likelihood of these types of violent storms.
