Electroslag Welding is a welding process, in which the heat is generated by an electric current passing between the filler metal and the workpiece through a molten slag covering the weld surface. Prior to welding, the gap between the two workpieces is filled with a welding flux. After this, a filler rod/electrode is lowered into the gap. The welding procedure is initiated by an arc between the electrode and the workpiece. Heat, generated by the arc, melts the fluxing powder and forms molten slag. The slag, having low electric conductivity, is maintained in a liquid state due to heat produced by the electric current. The slag reaches a very high temperature of about ~1500 degree centigrade. Due to this high temperature, the electrode material melts and fusees the workpiece together. This procedure is highly productive and can be used to weld very thick workpieces. It is specifically used to weld materials with thickness more than 30mm.
