“I noticed Susan doesn’t use words to tell her dogs what NOT to do. I use “Leave It!” for things I don’t want my dog to touch. If I understand correctly, Susan expects them to learn this behavior just by rewarding the behavior she wants?”. That’s a great question I received this week, and it’s very popular!
I believe in teaching dogs to make good choices on their own rather than using cues to stop undesirable behavior. Instead of using commands like "leave it," I focus on reinforcing the behaviors I want, creating a relationship based on mutual understanding and trust. This approach not only avoids behavior chains that you don’t want, but also creates dogs who can make brilliant choices even if we are not around, and their focus on us is inspired rather than demanded.
