Barely a week after Cyclone Tauktae ravaged India’s western coast. A very severe cyclone called Yaas is forming in the Bay of Bengal. Currently a deep depression, this will intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in the next 48 hours. Cyclone Yaas will make landfall around noon of May 26 between Paradeep in Odisha and Sagar Island in West Bengal. The severe cyclone is likely to carry wind speeds of 155-165 km/h gusting up to 180 km/h. The cyclonic system remained stationary for 6 hours before making a move towards India at a speed of 2 km/h. Odisha has issued a cyclone warning to 12 districts, while the Indian Coast Guards are closely monitoring the situation. In May 2020, Amphan, a category 5 storm, had wreaked havoc in West Bengal, Odisha, and Bangladesh. Cyclone Yaas has been named by Oman and in English, it means the flower jasmine.
