Al centro dei colloqui, che si sono svolti nella residenza del capo di Stato russo di Sochi, sul Mar Nero, la situazione in Siria. Il numero uno del Cremlino ha chiesto apertamente a Israele di non compiere alcuna azione che possa in qualche modo destabilizzare la situazione nel Paese, poi ha aggiunto: "Abbiamo un comune sentire per il quale se il conflitto armato in quel Paese proseguirà, potrà avere conseguenze disastrose sia per la Siria che per la regione. Solo una fine rapida del conflitto armato può prevenire questo scenario negativo, oltre che una soluzione politica".
All'inizio di maggio Israele aveva bombardato installazioni militari siriane e ora teme che Mosca possa vendere un avanzato sistema di difesa aereo a Bashar al Assad. Un sistema che complicherebbe ulteriormente una soluzione diplomatica al conflitto.
