Here are 5 things you probably missed from the movie.
1) Leo did not want Mark Wahlberg (Marky Mark) in the movie. Mark Wahlberg, had to read for the part six times, because Leonardo Dicaprio didn't want him in it. Dicaprio remained stubborn and was adamant that he would not co-star with him. During the early stages of filming, it is reported also, that the pair were at each others throats.
However, after multiple readings for the part, Mark won Leonardo over, and it wasn't long before the pair of them became friends. In a 2015 interview, Wahlberg recalled that the squabble was due to him being disrespectful towards Leo, at a charity basketball match.
2) We get an early look at some very familiar faces who would later star in the hit TV show Sopranos. Lorraine Bracco plays Jim's mother in the movie. Michael Imperioli portrayed, Bobby in the film. In the TV show Sopranos, he plays the part of Christopher Moltisanti. There is also a scene that features Vincent Pastore, as a construction worker, who gets vomited on. In Sopranos he plays the role as Big Pussy.
3) Ethan Hawke, Eric Stoltz and River Phoenix were originally set to feature, in the movie.
"The Basketball Diaries" almost went into production as a film in the late eighties, but was scrapped by Columbia Pictures. Phoenix was so eager to play the part of Jim Carroll in The Basketball Diaries, that he pulled out a paperback copy of the book, during an MTV interview, shouting the words, "I want to play Jim Carroll". As it turns out, Dicaprio was a huge fan of phoenix growing up.
In an interview with, Esquire magazine, Leo said: "I grew up revering River Phoenix as the great actor of my generation, and all I ever wanted was to have just an opportunity to shake his hand."
4) The role of Reggie, who was played by the actor Ernie Hudson, did not appear in the original book. The charismatic actor, that you may recall from, ghostbusters, and the crow, had a very important role in this film. Where he played the role as a kind and caring friend.
5) After all was said and done, It turns out that the real Jim Carroll, wasn't really a big fan of the movie. Jim Carroll had no idea who Leonardo DiCaprio was and was shocked when he realised he was the kid from, the TV show, Growing Pains.
In an interview with the Los Angeles times, this is what Jim Carroll had to say:
"When they first told me it was gonna be Leo. I didn't know who he was. "If they'd said the kid from Growing Pains, I would have known, because when I first saw that kid, I said, 'This kid has a lot of presence.' I said, 'That kid is very pretty.
