The BMW 3.0 CSL is a unique combination of design and performance, created to be driven on the road using race technology from five decades of racing expertise from BMW M GmbH. Its exterior elegance, classic sports cockpit, intelligent lightweight construction with a straight-six cylinder engine, manual transmission and rear-wheel drive provide an emotional journey through the powerful history of the world's most iconic logo.
The limited production model was crafted with special attention given to every detail, creating 50 consecutively numbered units that have become coveted and rare collector's items amongst enthusiasts of the BMW M brand. A ride in this vehicle is not only an exclusive high-performance experience, but also a chance to encounter emotion and power that can only be found in this anniversary edition model.
The production of the BMW 3.0 CSL takes up to three months, due to its dedication to excellence in craftsmanship and precisely coordinated technologies. The exclusive interior CFRP components are produced by hand both in Munich and at the BMW Group component factory in Landshut, with a specific process designed for the paintwork which applies a characteristic colour design to each part.
A team of 30 experienced technicians is responsible for the configuration and assembly of the vehicles, which passes through eight assembly cycles that takes up to 10 days. The large proportion of manual work results in a much greater time required to assemble this model than a conventional BMW M automobile. After completion, there is multi-stage quality inspection and approval process at the main Dingolfing plant before it is sent out for delivery. This production site also produces several BMW M automobiles, as well as luxury sedans of the BMW 7 Series and body components for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
Boasting the most powerful straight six-cylinder engine ever used in a road-legal BMW M automobile, the BMW 3.0 CSL follows a tradition of exceptionalengine performance. Its predecessor marked a new record with an output of 151 kW/206 hp - not just for six-cylinder models, but all BMW production vehicles to that point.
Since then, the straight six-cylinder engine with M Power has seen impressive development. It reached 204 kW/277 hp in the 1978 BMW M1 and 250 kW/340 hp in the 1991 second-generation BMW M5. The 2014 fifth generation BMW M3 was even more powerful at 317 kW/431 hp, thanks to its M TwinPower Turbo technology.
The same technological roots power both the 3.0 CSL and current DTM winning car, delivering a 3.0-litre power unit with a typical M high-revving concept for spontaneous revving and an extremely rigid crankcase in a sleeveless closed-deck design, along with a forged lightweight crankshaft and cylinder head core incorporating 3D printing technology for optimal performance in extreme driving conditions. The cooling system and oil supply are specially designed for such dynamic situations as well.
For its championship win in DTM, the BMW M4 GT3 was powered by an around 600 hp iteration of this latest straight six-cylinder engine; its large scale production version available in current BMW models delivers up to 375 kW/510 hp. However, the version developed exclusively for the 3.0 CSL is even more powerful: 412 kW/560 hp maximum output and 550 Nm maximum torque enabled by the revolutionary M TwinPower Turbo technology – setting another new record for straight six-cylinder models from BMW M GmbH with road approval. It gives linear power delivery up to 7200 min-1 speed too – showcasing why this vehicle is so special!
