The escalating conflict in Ukraine poses an immediate and growing threat to the lives and well-being of the country's 7.5 million children.
On February 28, 2022, UNICEF spokesperson James Elder visited an air raid shelter in Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine, to speak with some of the families who have crowded into the shelter after being forced out of their homes by the rising tide of violence.
Local volunteers have donated toys, food and gifts to help displaced children and their families.
In one corner, 7-year-old Elvira plays with 15-month-old Artur. Elvira can't remember the name of her hometown and she doesn't know which country she'll be going to next, but she knows she doesn't want to leave her home.
Ukraine's children are learning lessons no child should learn about the devastating consequences of armed combat. UNICEF remains on the ground in Ukraine and in neighboring countries, reaching children with lifesaving services including safe water, health care, psychosocial support and emergency education.
