Commonly shortened to "reefer," the refrigerated boxcar is an important tool in railroading, transporting goods that require controlled temperatures. Modern trains have actual cooling units on the individual boxcars, but the first refer cars were chilled with ice in a clever invention that loaded the ice through the roof, allowing the cool air to descend downward over its contents.
