Knobbed Whelk: Busycon carica (Gmelin, 1791)
Description: The Knobbed Whelks is a dextral shell. Adults will have about six coils. It is named for the nodes projecting from the widest part of the shell coil. Shell color can vary depending on it's geographical location.
Size: 4-9 inches
Range: Along the Atlantic Coast from Massachusetts to Florida
Ecology: They are large predatory snails that feed on bivalves like clams and oysters.
Fun Fact: It is the official state shell of New Jersey.
