Video script based on Chapter 12 MORAL IMAGINATION (Darwinism And Ethics)
Moral Intuition is the ability to think, and intuitively select an ethical principle that will be applied to a particular life situation.
Moral Imagination is the ability to imagine, and creatively translate a universal ethical principle into a concrete idea which details the specific action to be carried out.
Moral Technique is the ability to learn skills, in order to transform the world according to one's ethical imaginations without violating the natural laws by which things are connected.
Moral Technique
In order to realize the ideas produced by moral imagination, one must set to work in a specific field. Human deeds transform already existing situations by giving them a new form. To be able to transform a specific thing or event in accordance with a moral idea, two things are necessary;
1. Understand its underlying laws
These laws explain how it has worked up until now. It is these laws that one intends to change or give a new direction.
2. Find the method by which it is possible to transform the existing laws into new ones. This involves learning the skills and techniques that have been developed to bring about change.
Acquiring Moral Technique
Acquiring moral technique is a part of effective moral activity that depends on a knowledge of the particular world of phenomena with which one is dealing. This knowledge will be found in a branch of general scientific knowledge. So, in addition to having the ability to select an ethical principle with thinking (moral intuition) and envision a goal with moral imagination, moral deeds also require
the ability to transform the world without causing unnecessary chaos by violating the natural laws that connect things. Moral technique can be learned in the same way that science in general can be learned.
Lack Moral Imagination
Some people lack moral imagination. People are usually better able to set goals using the ideas of others than to productively originate new ideas, out of their imagination, of future achievements not yet in existence. Therefore, someone without moral imagination may well receive moral ideas from others and skillfully work them into reality.
Lack Technical Skill
Some people lack Moral Technique. In the case where someone has moral imagination but lacks the technical skill required to achieve the objective, then they must rely on the service of others to carry out their ideas.
