Joe Biden is running for re-election with the message - Let’s finish the job.
The 80-year-old Democratic President wants four more years in the White House and will try to block Donald Trump - or another Republican - from taking back the keys to the Oval Office.
The election is still 18 months away - not until November 5, 2024 - but with Biden’s announcement, after months of speculation, the starting gun has been fired.
Mr Biden is optimistic, but the voters have already shown that they are not convinced, handing Republicans control of the House of Representatives in the midterms last year.
There are legitimate concerns. Already the oldest president in history, he will be closer to 90 than 80 by the end of a second term. His Vice President, Kamala Harris, is historically unpopular. Inflation hit a 40-year high on his watch, illegal immigration is at a 20-year high, 13 service members died in the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, and more than $30 billion has been pumped into Ukraine while there are plenty of domestic crises that need addressing.
