Though we were fans of the Subaru Ascent when it first dropped for the 2019 model year, the intervening time period has seen a number of competitive offerings proliferate within the tremendously popular mid-size three-row SUV segment. And without any significant overhaul, Subaru’s largest SUV struggles to keep with the pack.
As part of our three-row SUV comparison test in Palm Springs, Calif., the Ascent went head-to-head with some of the segment’s heaviest hitters. Seemingly a class size down on the rest of the field, these dimensions didn’t do the Subie any favors with the judges, who found occupant space in the first and third rows to be cramped and interior stowage to be surprisingly limited.
Visibility was good, as was the standard all-wheel drive and turbocharged power, but the Ascent landed dead last in fuel efficiency, further exacerbated by intrusive active-safety systems and a frustrating infotainment system. While you wouldn’t be making a complete mistake if you just have to have a 2024 Subaru Ascent, it’s likely worth waiting for the next generation to arrive.
