Children of Incarcerated Parents
Dr. Jeaneete Betancourt, the senior vice president of Community and Family Engagement at the Sesame Workshop, introduces the “Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration” initiative to address the 2.7 million children who are affected by an incarcerated parent each year. The Sesame Workshop put this initiative into place after recognizing a lack of services concerning the issue of incarceration from a child’s perspective. They incorporated a new Muppet named Alex who shares the same feelings of stigma, isolation, and confusion that children of incarcerated parents might experience, but receives the help and support of those on Sesame Street. The initiative was launched at Riker’s Island to bring these families together in a celebration of children.
Justice in Focus: Crime Bill @ 20 is an initiative of the Vera Institute of Justice. 20 years ago, the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, known today as the Crime Bill, was the largest piece of criminal justice legislation in U.S. history. It was passed with strong bipartisan support in an era when high-profile violent crime gripped the nation. Crime Bill @ 20 intends to start a dialogue to reflect on the impact of the Crime Bill, and to consider the future of criminal justice policy.
