STORYLINE:
Muslims throughout Asia mark the celebration of Eid Al-Adha and pray for peace for the Palestinians.
Thousands of Muslims in Pakistan's largest city of Karachi gathered Monday for Eid al-Adha prayers in open spaces and in mosques.
One of the biggest Islamic holidays, Eid al-Adha commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as recounted in the Quran.
Muslims with financial means celebrate this test of faith by slaughtering livestock and animals and distributing the meat to the poor.
Muslims in Indonesia on Monday gathered on a football pitch for communal prayers to celebrate Eid al-Adha and called on people to pray for those afflicted by the Israel-Hamas war.
But amid the celebration there was concern for struggling Palestinians.
“I pray and will always pray for our brothers and sisters in Palestine and Gaza who are now suffering,” worshipper Adi Prasetya said after praying at a field in southern Jakarta.
Devotees across Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority nation of 170 million people, marked Eid al-Adha in open fields and mosques where many prayed for a better world free from war.
In the capital city of Dhaka, a prominent Imam led a gathering on the Supreme Court grounds where 35,000 men and women joined.
The Islamic holiday is a joyous occasion that coincides with the final rites of the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
Much of Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Bangladesh, will observe Eid al-Adha on Monday, while Muslims in other parts of the globe, including Saudi Arabia, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen celebrated the holiday on Sunday.
