From Wikipedia – [ Ссылка ] :
Olivier's HAMLET is the Shakespeare film that has received the most prestigious accolades, winning the Hollywood Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Actor, and the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
It was, however, very controversial among Shakespearean purists, who felt that Laurence Olivier had made too many alterations and excisions to the 4–hour play by cutting nearly 2 hours' worth of content. Milton Shulman wrote in The Evening Standard: "To some it will be one of the greatest films ever made, to others a deep disappointment. Laurence Olivier leaves no doubt that he is one of our greatest living actors. His liberties with the text, however, are sure to disturb many."
The changes are certainly too numerous to count. They range from outright suppressions to slight changes in scene sequence. Many are quite understandable, given the essential differences between theatre and cinema, the economic constraints of cinema production and exhibition, and – a surmise – the British economic situation in 1948. But others are really surprising. Most notably, do not search for Rosencranz, Guildenstern, or Fortinbras, for they do not appear here at all.
