This cover is all about the GROOOOOVE. And it’s a dam good funky one. I have huge respect and admiration for musician and bassist Meshell Ndegeocello. I decided to do this one because I found an old mix tape named Drum Challenge I made eons ago. Yes, I used to do those in order to challenge myself. Now listening to the song you would think: ‘’ not much of a challenge there Denis’’. Ah but wait until you get to 3:05 , when s#*% gets extra funky and super syncopated. I swear to the almighty I tried and tried and tried back then to figure out what the hell drummer Gene Lake was doing on those 8 bars. His feel was completely different from mine at the time and it felt contrary to what I would do. In short, I abandoned the project and forgot all about it.
Fast forward some 15 or so years later. Thanks to digital technology and more knowledge on my part to syncopated rhythms, I have finally nailed those 8 bars. Wouhou! Sometimes it’s not all about the speed or how many notes you can cram in kids. Sometimes it’s also about the feel.
So besides those 8 bars, it was also a challenge to be tight with a song that is not a drumless track. I think I did pretty good. What do you think? Actually never mind. ;)
Btw, I did not pick this song to make a statement or judgement. I just like the song. Back in 1996 this was indeed a controversial subject. Hopefully some 20 years later we are past that and being whatever orientation, doesn’t define you. It is just a matter of fact.
I have friends on all sides and couldn’t care less. As long as they are good friends, that is what matters to me. Anyways, I am babbling here. In short, kudos to Meshell for doing this song.
