Experience a “Sing-Along with Mele Fong” class as Mele on ukulele and husband Rich on u-bass led students in playing Yellow (Mynah) Bird with Bossa Nova Strum as the song lyrics and ukulele chords were projected on the large screen at Kaunoa Senior Center for adults 55 and better on Maui. We sang the song twice and learned the story behind the song in keeping with Hawaiian oral history traditions.

Yellow Bird was written by Michel Mauleart Monton in 1893 and based on a poem praising the beauty of a Haitian woman. The melody was adapted in the mid-1950s as calypso music rose in popularity in the U.S. The new English lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman bear no relation to the original song, but there is still reference to little birds. In 1961, Arthur Lyman made Yellow Bird a pop single when he played the song on vibraphones with the Martin Denny combo. This arrangement uses a local version of lyrics we made up to sing about the mynah bird that is common in Hawaii (rather than the yellow bird).

This song was part of the “Sing-Along Hawaiian Party Songs” one-hour class on January 30, 2023, with 17 students signed up.
