NASA's first batch of James Webb Space Telescope images marks a new era of discovery as the powerful new tool becomes fully operational.
The $10 billion observatory is entrusted with unveiling the processes that govern our universe, from star formation to the evolution of the first galaxies.
The images, which were released on Monday and Tuesday, depict star formation in the Carina Nebula, the atmosphere of a gigantic planet, a cluster of galaxies, one of the deepest views of the cosmos ever taken, and a planetary nebula.
The deep field image, which President Biden presented on Monday, depicts galaxies as they were more than 13 billion years ago, not long after the Big Bang.
The image of the massive, very hot exoplanet WASP-96 b taken by the JWST reveals water vapour in its atmosphere.
And the telescope's image of the planetary nebula, known as the Southern Ring Nebula, reveals the dying star at its heart like never before.
The JWST observes the universe in infrared light, allowing it to see through dust that obscures optical-wavelength images. This enables the telescope to observe galaxies further away—and further back in time—in order to put together how the first galaxies originated after the Big Bang.
While the telescope is already in orbit and looks to be performing well, its development cost billions of dollars more than predicted and took decades longer to complete.
And these images represent only the beginning of Webb's journey, which scientists hope will reframe their understanding of the universe's past.
