Fitness trends change every year and sometimes the one that stands out can be surprising to people because a trend means that something is extremely popular now. But a trend is like being relevant or being a hot actor or actress at the moment. Your relevancy with time and age starts to decline and something newer and younger or different becomes the next big fitness trend. That is just how life is with anything.
According to the worldwide survey of fitness and gym trends via the editors of ACSM’s Health and Fitness Journal the #1 fitness trend in 2022 is wearable technology and it was rated #2 in 2021 and it was #1 in 2019 and 2018. Coming in 2nd and 3rd was home workout gyms and outdoor exercise in 2022. It makes sense why wearable technology is so popular because people want to see how well their doing in their fitness workouts tracking data wise. What's interesting about that survey is that online live and on-demand exercise classes fell to #9 for 2022. In 2021 online live and on demand exercise classes was the #1 fitness trend. And that's easy to figure out why. It was because of the start of COVID19 and the pandemic and when all the fitness gyms closed temporarily. Many people were trying to figure out how can they exercise at home since the gyms were closed. So virtual workouts at that peak pandemic time were in extreme high demand.
People that love these wearable technology devices want to know the calorie burn; they want to know what their heart rate is during their workout. Or they want to know what their resting heart rate is. And it also tracks your route by way of GPS tracking, and it tells how many steps you did in a day. And it tracks how many calories you burn in day just by regular day to day activity independent of a fitness workout. Wearable technology will always be popular, and the technology gets better and better every year in terms of all the fitness data it can track. So, it is no surprise it is the #1 fitness trend for 2022.
