A knowledgeable answer from Sliptonic to a simple user question. "Can FreeCad Path do proper 3d contour machining? I'm not sure I've seen an example yet".

Lately there is big interest about 4 and 5-axis CAM in FreeCAD. Surprisingly, for all the expressed interest, there really aren't any competing solutions in the open-source space. There are a handful of 2D, 2.5D and 3D CAM options but really nothing for generating 4 and 5 axis tool-paths. Even the 'free' commercial solutions reserve 4 and 5 axis features for their paid tiers. Sliptonic and it's team goal is to change that and the FreeCAD community can help in the process.

Linkstage3 is a development branch of freecad used by project contributor RealThunder to test new features that hopefully will be merged with master. It is highly experimental and must be used with caution, do your backups and stuff. FreeCAD is a opensource parametric CAD software similar to Fusion360 or SolidWorks with CAD and CAM capabilities.
