Elizabeth was born with a severe type of renal vascular disease called renal artery stenosis, a blockage of an artery to the kidneys that can lead to kidney failure and hypertension (high blood pressure). Elizabeth's stenosis was so severe that initially doctors thought it would be something she may have to live with her whole life, limiting her activity and keeping her out of competitive sports and limiting physical activity throughout her life. Then a physician suggested she see Dr. James Stanley at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, who was able to perform a complex procedure to restore blood flow to the kidney and preserve kidney function, opening up a whole new world of possibility for Elizabeth.
