David Abba Zubair, M.D., Ph.D. Associate Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and medical and scientific director of the Cell Therapy Laboratory at Mayo Clinic in Florida, presents “"Growing Stem Cells in Space: Medicine’s Next Big thing?” This informal presentation was given to an audience in the Mayo Clinic Research Information Center in Rochester, Minn. Aug. 4, 2015. View this video to learn more about the plans to grow stem cells aboard the International Space Station and how this could help patients recover from stroke and possibly even generate human tissues and organs in space. This is the first experiment of its kind to be conducted in space, and the first to evaluate bone marrow derived human stem cells for regenerative medicine application. The ultimate goal of getting stem cells to the International Space Station is to determine whether stem cells will grow faster in space than here on Earth.
