(3 Jun 2021) THIERRY FREMAUX ANNOUNCES LINEUP, CHANGES TO THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL AT PRESS CONFERENCE
Thierry Fremaux announced the 24-film line-up for the 74th Cannes Film Festival on Thursday (3 JUNE 2021) at a press conference in Paris.
The festival director explained additional changes to the event, that will take place in July this year instead of its May slot due to the coronavirus pandemic, after being canceled in 2020. Some filmmakers like Wes Anderson ("The French Dispatch") and Paul Verhoeven ("Benedetta") - who were supposed to attend in 2020 - chose to postpone releasing their film and bring it to this year's festival.
Sean Penn's "Flag Day" was a last-minute addition, confirmed by Fremaux during the conference, and the opening movie is Leos Carax's "Annette."
The rest of the line-up includes Francois Ozon's "Tout s'est bien passe," Nanni Moretti with "Tre Piani", Julia Ducournau's "Titane," Apichatpong Weerasethakul's "Memoria," Nadav Lapid "Ahed's Knee" ," "The Story of my Wife" by Ildiko Enyedi, "Bergman Island" by Mia Hansen-Love, "Drive my Car" by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, "Casablanca Beats" by Nabil Ayouch and "Compartment no.6" by Juho Kuosmanen.
Also "The Worst Person in the World" by Joachim Trier, "La Fracture" by Catherine Corsini, "The Restless from Joachim Lafosse, "Lingui" by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, "Paris, 13th District" by Jacques Audiard, "Nitram" by Justin Kurzel, "Par un Demi-Clair Matin" by Bruno Dumont, "Petrov's Flu" by Kirill Serebrennikov, "Red Rocket" by Sean Baker and "A Hero" by Asghar Farhadi.
Fremaux said there will be a few artistic changes to the festival, including the addition of a new section called Cannes Premiere, where critically acclaimed filmmakers that don't show in competition can screen their latest film.
While the Un Certain Regard strand will focus more on up-and-coming voices; the festival will also try to be more environmentally conscious and will show a series of documentaries on the climate crisis this year.
The festival said there will be socially distanced screenings with hygiene measures in place, which means there will be no hugging and cheek kissing on the red carpet. A COVID rapid testing site will operate within the festival perimeter where festival goers will be taking non-invasive tests every 48 hours.
The organisers said they still can't guarantee people from overseas will be able to attend, as the French government's decisions do limit certain countries from sending representatives.
The Cannes Film Festival will take place this year between 6-17 July.
