In this video #3 Old Brick Construction Versus New: What’s The Difference? Segmental Brick Arches, brick arch building series of 5 shorts, we compare the old brick buildings in the Old Mill District in Bend, OR, to new construction brick buildings. We'll look at a few of differences in materials, construction methods, and overall appearance. Here we look at segmental brick arches with multiple voussoirs. They are using “rough” arches here where the mortar creates the wedge, and not the brick. These arches are much faster and cheaper.
Old brick buildings are typically made with triple wythe walls, real arches, tumbled brick, and good detailing. This gives them a more solid, durable, and aesthetically pleasing appearance. New brick buildings, on the other hand, often use control joints, wire cut brick, perfect mortar joints, and other shortcuts that can compromise the quality and beauty of the building.
We'll also discuss the longevity of old versus new brick buildings. Old brick buildings are often still standing strong after centuries, while new brick buildings may only last a few decades. Why? Lovability is a big part.
In the end, we'll leave you with some tips for choosing the right brick construction for your project.
