Bass-baritone Cody Quattlebaum sings Jesus's aria 'Ist's möglich, ist's möglich' ('If it is possible') from Handel's Brockes-Passion HWV 48 [c.1716]. Cody is joined by the Academy of Ancient Music, directed by Peter Whelan.
TRANSLATION:
'Ist's möglich, ist's möglich
Daß dein Zorn sich stille,
So laß den Kelch, So laß den Kelch vorüber gehn,
Doch müsse, Vater, nicht mein Wille,
Dein Wille nur allein geschehen!'
'If it is possible
that your anger can be assuaged
then let this cup pass from me.
Yet, Father, it is not my will
but your will alone that must be fulfilled.'
300 years from the first known performance (Hamburg, Holy week, 1719), the Academy of Ancient Music re-discovered this neglected masterpiece with a new edition of the music, new translation, new recording, and a concert performance on Good Friday 2019 at London's Barbican Hall. More information on our Brockes-Passion project can be found on our website: www.aam.co.uk.
