This is a render of a shot from Meet the Engineer using the Renderman render engine, this is the render engine used by Disney Animation Studios, Pixar and many other studios for their feature films ranging from VFX (such as the memorable Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the Marvel Cinematographic Universe and many other renowned movies and shows)to animated films (such as the recent Turning Red, along with all of the Disney and Pixar's feature films).
I had to adapt and redo many of the Team Fortress 2 assets in this shot such as particle systems and materials with renderman's own shaders such as the PxrDisney, Lama and PixarSurface shaders. This shot was rendered with industry-standard colour spaces and physics-based materials with many of the principles of achieving photorealism without losing the original animation's feel.
I'm not planning to use this for future projects because I would need a license which is very expensive and my computer is too outdated to handle the simplest of renders in a standard workflow. As a reference: this scene took me about a month to render only being able to do it frame by frame. That and I think open-source Cycles is getting out there and it's already hitting industry standards.
For comparison, the CYCLES Version (another Raytraced Render):
