As Book 2 begins, the Baudelaire orphans, having been saved from the clutches of Count Olaf and his henchpersons, are back in the care of Mr. Poe, who is driving them to their new guardian. The children are briefly optimistic — surely whoever they will meet cannot be worse than Count Olaf?
Eventually, they will learn that such a sunny (!) outlook is rarely deserved and often deeply dissatisfying, leading as it does to mortal peril, terrible acting, and disappointment.
(There is coconut cake, but that's hardly worth mentioning, is it? Or maybe it IS.)
