Lake Enriquillo in the south of the Dominican Republic, adjacent to the Haitian border, is the largest saltwater lake in the Caribbean, covering the surface of 375 square kilometres. This lake is also home to the largest population of Acutus crocodiles, also known as American crocodiles.
Tasked with the protection of the American crocodiles in the reserve is Livio. Maintaining the welfare of the crocodiles is a strenuous balancing act as they face several threats: the salt level of the hypersaline water and the persisting presence of poachers.
