Karen Matthews 'Lied About Her Convictions So That She Could Get A Job Working At A Coffee Shop
Matthews, who faked kidnap of daughter Shannon in a bid to get £50k reward, said she was on probation for shoplifting
Kidnap mum Karen Matthews lied she’d been convicted of shoplifting when she applied for a job, according to sources.
Karen, 41 – who faked the abduction of daughter Shannon to try to bag a £50,000 reward in 2008 – allegedly said she was on probation for petty theft.
But the truth came out when she was pictured in the run-up to BBC TV dramatisation The Moorside .
The show told how Karen plotted with Michael Donovan , 48, to hide the nine-year-old, who was drugged and tied to a roof beam for 24 days.
A source told us: “Karen came to the coffee shop around 2013 looking for voluntary work. We took her on three days a week.
"We knew her under an alias. She had to go and see the probation officer every two weeks.
“She said she had done stupid things. When probed a bit she said it was to do with shoplifting.”
Matthews, of Dewsbury, Yorks, took a new identity after she and Donovan were freed from eight-year sentences.
The source said: “Karen still calls into the coffee shop. We only realised who she was with the news the show would be airing on TV.
“I felt shocked. She’s been a friend.”
